JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 15 (Bernama) — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), through the UTM School of Professional and Continuing Education (UTMSPACE), and Johor Darul Ta’zim Football Club (JDT) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish of a new Diploma in Sports and Fitness programme.

In a statement today, UTM said the programme, set to begin in December, will pave the way for higher education institutions, especially UTM, to collaborate with the country’s sports industry to raise the education standards of sportsmen and sportswomen.

“The development of this new academic programme, overseen by UTMSPACE, aims to provide a path for further studies in the field of sports and fitness for the community, especially athletes,” it said.

The MoU was signed by UTMSPACE chief executive officer and managing director Professor Ts Dr Nazri Ali and JDT acting general manager Datuk Salehuddin Hassan.

According to UTM, the duration of the programme is two and a half years, with an entry requirement of three credits in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, including the Bahasa Melayu subject.

“The Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Credit Award (APEL C) will also be used in providing opportunities and benefits to students who are directly involved in the field of sports, such as trainees at the JDT Academy.

“Through the APEL C, the learning evaluation process based on combined knowledge and skills obtained while at the JDT Academy can be used for credit transfers for specific courses in the Diploma in Sports and Fitness programme,” it said.

In the same statement, Nazri said the Sports and Fitness Diploma programme represents the manifestation of the desire expressed by JDT management, who are deeply concerned about the future and direction of JDT Academy trainees.

“Twenty-seven trainees, aged 18 and above, are expected to enrol as full-time students in the programme,” he said.
