Nissan will begin using low carbon aluminium parts made from ‘green’ or recycled aluminium from 2024 onward, aiming to fully transition to such parts by 2030.
For current models, Nissan aims to begin purchasing wheels, chassis parts, axle parts and harness wires made from green aluminium in Japan, the United States, and Europe. As a result, by the end of FY 2024 approximately 20 per cent of the newly mined aluminium Nissan uses for car parts procured in those markets is expected to be replaced with green or recycled aluminium.
New models produced from FY 2027 will use low carbon aluminium.
Nissan said green aluminium is produced using non-fossil fuel-derived electricity and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production by approximately 50 per cent, while recycled aluminium can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 95 per cent.
By using the materials, Nissan believes it will be a significant step towards its aim of achieving carbon neutrality in the entire lifecycle of its vehicles by 2050.
