A few days ago, CleanTechnica’s Scott Cooney talked with two experts from Withum, a top 25 advisory, tax, and accounting firm that specializes in renewable energy tax credits (among other important topics) and the cleantech industry. The resulting episode of CleanTech Talk, our podcast, taught us a lot about the world of clean energy tax credits, especially in politically uncertain times.

During the must-listen episode, Lynn M. Mucenski-Keck and Joe Holman walked us through essential things that could make the difference between making it or losing it in the cleantech industry in 2025.

On the positive side, a major theme in this episode is how things have become easier for clean technology businesses since 2020. Not only has the Inflation Reduction Act made things a lot easier for small businesses to participate in the renewable credit markets, but the political environment has also played a key role in easing new projects. With the help of experts like you’d find at Withum, it’s a good environment.

First off, we will learn why Withum is confident in the future of these tax credits, despite the potential outcome of the upcoming election. The actual breakout on who benefits from these credits may surprise you, as well as the impact foreign governments, state governments, and local governments all have. But, timing is essential, and you can learn a lot more about how to plan for some of these credits and choose the right approach in the episode.

Sadly, there are still some real challenges that we have to consider. Technological limits, ethical issues in supply chains, and many other things play important roles, but these less political issues are solvable with hard work. What’s not as solvable are some of the political and bureaucratic issues that can keep the industry from rolling with the punches like it should. Again, we learned why it’s essential to get expert help with strategic planning in relation to these tax and regulatory issues.

All in all, the key message of this episode is that there are a variety of ways that we’ve already “lubricated the system,” and there are ways that companies like Withum can work to help us make things even smoother when a company needs to plan for these opportunities and challenges.

Whether you’re an investor, someone running a clean technology company, or just an enthusiast/activist trying to understand what’s coming next for clean technologies, I think this is a great podcast for you to check out and learn something from.
