Over the last few months, we’ve been getting more pictures and information about the Denza N9, the flagship SUV from the BYD Premium brand. Now, thanks to a government regulator, we know a lot more about the car. Perhaps the biggest news is just how heavy the Denza is, tipping the scales at over three tons.

It is believed that the N9, like the Z9 GT flagship, will come in both PHEV and fully electric forms. However, this month, only a regulatory listing from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is available for the PHEV version.
Not only is the N9 heavy, with a curb weight depending on the version of 3130 or 3245 kg, but it also has big dimensions, particularly width. The length is 5258 mm, while the width is 2030 mm, and the height is 1830 mm. Significantly, the wheelbase, at 3125 mm, is exactly the same length as that of the Z9 GT. Both use the same Denza e3 (Yi san fang) platform.

As with the Z9 GT the N9 uses a three motor setup. This involves a 200 kW TZ210XYD on the front axle and a 240 kW TZ220XYAM electric motor powering each of the rear wheels. Significantly, these two motor rear motors are more powerful than those used by the Z9 GT, which only have a maximum power of 220KW. The e3 platform allows individual use of the three electric motors in conjunction with the rear-wheel steering, thereby enabling various maneuvers, such as pointing the nose into a parking space and then using the motors to move the rear into the remainder of the parallel space. The car rides on 22-inch wheels and buyers have a choice from a number of quite distinctive wheel designs.
As a PHEV, it also has a petrol-powered engine consisting of a 2.0T BYD479ZQA unit that can deliver up to 152 kW of power. As a BYD product, it, of course, uses lithium iron phosphate blade batteries from BYD subsidiary FinDreams. Top speed for the car is 230 km/h.
Earlier this month, the Denza N9 was spotted uncamouflaged testing in London. The car has a closed front grille below which are some quite aggressive air inlets. The roof line slightly decreases in height as it makes its way to the rear before ending in a spoiler. There are through tail lights, only broken by the Denza logo.

MIIT information tells us that the car has a retractable electric tow hook rated for loads of up to 2500 KG. It is equipped with Lidar and has a panoramic roof.
It is likely that we will see a pure EV version in filings over the next month or two, and it is unlikely that the Denza N9 will launch until both versions have approval for sale. One noticeable element is a special first edition badge listed as one of the options for decoration.
