The company that is involved in the recent importation of Israel dates is in the middle of the controversial storm that has reached the highest level discussion involving Malaysia’s parliament.

The hot topic was debated in parliament today which has stoked anger and wonderment on how the dates ended into the retail stores in the country.

Matahari Sdn Bhd the company that imported the medjool dates has since been seized by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. The company in a statement has issued an apology to its partners and customers as well staff who have been impacted by the incident.

Detailing the chronology, the company said In June 2022, it received a shipment of mixed food, including dates from its suppliers in Greece. As part of SOP the company’s procedure is to label all our products with details including origin to ensure all products meet the requirements for organic certification. The company said the certificate of analysis provided by its supplier listed the dates as sourced from Israel/Occupied Palestinian Areas.

Matahari said it ignorantly and, in hindsight, without being sensitive to the issue, proceeded to labeling the product, including listing Israel as origin. It said it only realised the mistake and its implications when it was brought up as an issue on social media and was contacted for comment on Monday, March 11, 2024. In which it said it immediately contacted its resellers and recalled the product.

The company said it has never knowingly or intentionally ordered products or conducted any business with Israel, and has never infringed any regulations and that it does not support Israel in any way.
