Proton apologises for mislabelling Sabah, Sarawak

The names of the states were accidentally swapped during a presentation by the national carmaker.

PETALING JAYA: National carmaker Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton) has issued an apology for mislabelling Sabah and Sarawak during a recent presentation.

The names of the states were accidentally swapped on a graphic that was displayed during the presentation.

In a statement, Proton acknowledged the error and said it regretted the mistake.

“We understand the sensitivities it has stirred among our fellow Malaysians. Proton holds the unity and diversity of Malaysia in the highest regard, and we are committed to respecting and celebrating all states equally.

“We sincerely apologise for any misunderstanding caused and appreciate any feedback from the public. We will ensure greater care in our future endeavours,” it said.

Netizens had slammed Proton after the presentation, taking swipes at the national carmaker over the blunder.

Sarawak deputy premier Dr Sim Kui Hian also criticised Proton, lamenting that big Malaysian corporations still did not know basic facts about the nation despite over 60 years since Malaysia’s formation.

“If big corporations in Malaysia still don’t know the most basic facts, what about ordinary Malaysians, I wonder? What else does the rest of Malaysia not know about Sabah or Sarawak?” he said in a Facebook post.
